Things Grandmere Did Not Teach Me

  1. Browned butter makes pecan pie transform into gastronomic gold.
  2. Playing old jazz music and dancing in bare feet makes being in the kitchen more fun - especially in a sundress in summer.
  3. Sponge curlers don't actually curl your hair and you shouldn't wear Merle Norman lipsticks until you're at least 35.
  4. Being angry is okay.
  5. Being uncomfortable is okay.
  6. Wanting to be left alone is okay.
  7. Getting the professional kind of help helps sometimes.
  8. Men can fix their own dinner plates, help cook it, are perfectly capable of washing dishes and listening - I don't care who you are or where you're from.
  9. The Great Santini is remarkably sad and should be read by more people than Pat Conroy fans.
  10. Days where you don't get dressed, put on makeup, or leave the house are good days to spend with your mum - even in spirit.
  11. How to good and proper miss somebody - whole-heartedly and occasionally to music.
